Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron Storms Handhelds This Fall by Game Informer Online May 26, 2009
While LucasArts are still tight-lipped about what’s going on with Battlefront III (if anything), the company has given us plenty of information on the newest handheld incarnation of the series, Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron. Coming to the PSP and Nintendo DS this fall, Elite Squadron will purportedly put even the old console titles to shame, by featuring multi-level battlefronts, deep character customization, and hundreds of unlockable items and bonuses to aid the player during battles (at least in the PSP version – the DS will feature “pre-determined weapon armaments,” which sounds a whole lot like the basic character classes of previous games).
In the single-player campaign of Elite Squadron, players will take on the role of X2, a clone trooper spawned from Jedi Master DNA and tasked with taking on his evil twin brother, X1. Sure it sounds a little bland, but everything that makes the Battlefront series great takes place out in the field, and with space and ground battles going on simultaneously for the first time, Elite Squadron could turn out to be very entertaining.

That is if some serious limitations don’t get in the way: the PSP version of Elite Squadron will only support 16-player multiplayer battles, which is impressive for a handheld, but underwhelming for a Battlefront fan. Even worse, the DS version will be limited to four players – though it appears LucasArts are trying to craft a different gameplay experience to boost the enjoyment. We’ll have to wait until fall to see if Elite Squadron is a worthy sequel in the Battlefront franchise – or if it will leave you wanting to use Darth Vader’s Force Choke on yourself.
